geography
The Belmer Bach is a 9.5 kilometer long river in the Osnabrück hill country and a right tributary of the Hase . It rises in the Belm district of Vehre , flows through the municipality of Belm in a south-westerly direction , where it feeds the mill pond of the old Belmer mill, and then reaches the Osnabrück urban area in the Gretesch district . A few kilometers later it joins the Hase in the area of the Osnabrück freight yard in the Fledder district . Its tributaries are the Icker Bach, the Halterner Bach, the Seelbach and the Nußbach. After the Nette, the Belmer Bach is the second largest tributary of the Hase within the Osnabrück urban area. In the Gretesch district, the sewage channel of the Felix Schoeller paper mill runs largely parallel to the course of the river . With the Devil's Stones , the Gretescher Stones and the Sundermann Stones, there are three large megalithic graves along its course.
nature
The course of the stream is largely expanded and straightened and has no vegetation that accompanies the stream. The upper stream is characterized by agricultural use. In the middle course of the stream, the sewage treatment plant of the municipality of Belm drains into the water, while a few hundred meters later the Felix Schoeller paper mill takes cooling water and discharges treated wastewater from production. Furthermore, the stream flows in its lower section through an approximately 200 meter long tunnel. Despite this ecologically difficult situation, you can find many species of fish in the Belmer Bach, such as the brown trout and the endangered loach . The kingfisher also has its territory here all year round.
