Beloit is a town in Rock County in the south of the US -amerikanischen state of Wisconsin . In 2000, Beloit had 35,775 residents. An estimate in 2006 showed an increase in the population to 36,348.

Beloit is located on the Rock River , which flows south and later southwest to the Mississippi River . It extends over 42.8 km², which is spread over 42.0 km² of land and 0.8 km² of water. The city is located directly on the border with the neighboring state of Illinois , to which the neighboring city of South Beloit, which is adjacent to the southern outskirts, already belongs. Because of this location, the city is also known as the Gateway to Wisconsin .

Interstate Highways 39 and 90 run on a shared stretch of road on the eastern edge of the city . At the city level, Interstate 43 branches off to Milwaukee in a northeastern direction. US Highway 51 runs along the Rock River through the center of Beloit, where Wisconsin Highways 81 and 213 meet.

Several railway lines also meet in Beloit.

The nearest major cities are Janesville and from there in a north-easterly direction Wisconsin's capital Madison (22.2 km and 87.1 km), Wisconsin's largest city Milwaukee (121 km northeast), Chicago (159 km southeast) and Rockford (Illinois) ( 30.5 km south).

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , a population of 35,775 was determined. These were distributed over 13,370 households in 8,904 families. The population density was 852.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 14,263 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 339.7 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 75.6 percent white , 15.4 percent African American , 0.4 percent Native American , 1.2 percent Asian, and 4.7 percent other. 2.8 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 9.1 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the named groups.

27.7 percent were under 18 years of age, 11.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44, 19.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.0 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 33 years. Statistically, there were 92.1 men for every 100 women, 87.2 for those over 18 years of age.

The median income per household was 36,414  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 42,083 USD. The median income for men was $ 32,870 and that for women was $ 23,925. The per capita income was $ 16,912. Around 9.6 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
