Benedict Niese
Jürgen Anton Benedikt Niese , also Benedictus Niese (born November 24, 1849 in Burg auf Fehmarn , Holstein , † February 1, 1910 in Halle ) was a German classical philologist and ancient historian .
Life
After studying history and classical philology in Kiel and Bonn, which he completed with a doctorate in Kiel in 1872 , Niese passed the teaching examination in 1873 and stayed in Italy and Paris from autumn 1873 to early 1876. In 1876 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen and in the following year became associate professor, in 1880 full professor for ancient history and classical philology in Marburg . In 1881 he followed a call to Breslau as professor of classical philology , but returned to Marburg in 1885 after Eugen Bormann's departure , where he was dean of the faculty of philosophy in 1890 and rector in 1901. On Winckelmannstag 1899 he was appointed a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . From 1906 until his death he was Ulrich Wilcken's successor Professor of Ancient History in Halle . Since 1901 he was a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and since 1905 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
Niese dealt with both philological topics ( Homer , edition of Flavius Josephus ) and with Greek and Roman history. In Handbook of classical studies he worked on the original by Robert Pöhlmann written outline of Roman history in the third (1906) and fourth edition (1910).
His father was Emil August Niese (1816–1869), pastor in the then Danish castle on Fehmarn and later seminar director in Eckernförde . His mother Benedicte Marie Niese was born in Matthiessen. The writer Charlotte Niese was his sister.
