Benedikt Emanuel Schack , also written Benedikt Emanuel Schak , (born February 7, 1758 in Mirotice , Bohemia , † December 10, 1826 in Munich ) was an Austrian opera singer ( tenor ) and composer .

Life

In 1773 Schack was a choraleist at the St. Vitus Church in Prague . He studied in 1775 /? in Vienna medicine and philosophy and took composition and singing lessons from Karl Frieberth . In 1780 Schack became Kapellmeister to Prince Heinrich von Schönaich-Carolath in Lower Silesia . After the chapel was closed in 1784, he moved through the country as a music dealer. In May 1786 he was engaged in Salzburg by the theater director Emanuel Schikaneder , in whose ensemble he went to Augsburg and Regensburg. When Schikaneder canceled his contract in Regensburg in May 1789, Schack accompanied him to Vienna. In the local Theater auf der Wieden on September 30, 1791, he sang the role of Tamino in the world premiere of Mozart's Magic Flute . He was also one of the singers with whom Mozart rehearsed parts of his Requiem the day before his death . Contrary to a widespread misunderstanding, Schack was not a flutist and in the role of Tamino did not play the flute himself.
