Benedict Hansen

Benedikt Hansen (born September 24, 1958 in Gentofte ) is a Danish actress. In addition to a successful theater career, she has worked in more than 40 film and television productions since the mid-1980s. She gained greater fame among other things through recurring roles in the Danish television series Commissioner Lund - Das Verbrechen (2009) and Borgen - Hazardous rope teams (2010-2013).

Life

Training and theater work

The daughter of a doctor and a trained lawyer was born in Gentofte (according to other sources in Copenhagen ), where she grew up with four siblings. Benedikt Hansen came from a family that had no relationship to acting. According to her own account, she only came into contact with acting through a friend who came from a theater family. After graduating from the State School in Gentofte in 1977, Hansen completed her acting studies at the State Theater School in Copenhagen from 1978 to 1981. After completing her training, she gained her first stage experience at the Rimfaxe Teater in Roskilde . From the mid-1980s, she managed to establish herself as a serious theater actress in Denmark. The breakthrough on the Copenhagen stage came in 1986 with two different leading roles - Hansen successfully played Eliza Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady (Amager Scenen) and Hilde Wangel in the drama Baumeister Solneß (Aveny Teatret).

Since 1990 Hansen has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Royal Danish Theater in Copenhagen ( Det Kongelige Teater ). Since then she has played leading roles in classical pieces as well as more modern fabrics and on experimental stages. The Danish daily Politiken unofficially granted Hansen the title of leading theater actress in Denmark at the end of the 1990s and particularly emphasized her portrayal of strong and passionate female characters, through which she had become known to the audience. She plays in a highly concentrated manner with soulful power and intellectual empathy, does not completely expose her often dangerous and unpredictable characters, but rather leaves room for secrets and tension beyond the stage. These include leading and title roles in Eugene O'Neill's Trauer muss Elektra (1993), Adam Oehlenschläger's Kjartan og Gudrun (1993), Lady Macbeth in Ole Bornedal's Macbeth production at the Gladsaxe Teater (1998) and the erotic appearances as Anne in Bille August's staging of Lars Noréns Detaljer (2002) or the part of Mrs. Robinson in the Danish staging of the American comedy The Graduation at Nørrebro Teater ( Fagre voksne verde , 2004).

Hansen was nominated three times for the Danish Reumert Theater Prize for her achievements as Princess von Eboli in Don Karlos after Schiller and Mr. Bengts hustru after Strindberg as well as Xenia in Astrid Saalbach's Verdensende and Gertrude in Hamlet . She received two further nominations for the award of the Danish theater critic (Teaterpokal), including for her portrayal of Cleopatra in Antonius und Cleopatra (2001). In 2007, Hansen was awarded the Olaf Poulsen grant of DKK 30,000 for her theater work . In 2003 she was appointed first class knight of the Dannebrog Order by the Danish Queen Margrethe . Hansen admires the actors Max von Sydow and Al Pacino .

Film and television career

Parallel to her work in the theater, Hansen has worked in more than 30 film and television productions since the mid-1980s. In contrast to her theater career, her main roles have so far been largely denied. The daily Politiken speculated in 2008 that Hansen's poor success in film and television could be due to its rather unfashionable-looking clear pronunciation. In the past, she had also appeared repeatedly as a speaker for radio plays. On Danish television, Hansen made recurring appearances as crime reporter Trine in the series Unit One - The Specialists (2000-2004) and as a scheming opposition politician Birgitte Agger in the second season of the series Kommissarin Lund - Das Verbrechen (2009) alongside Nicolas Bro . From 2010 onwards, Hansen received international praise from the specialist critics for her supporting role in the television production Borgen - Hazardous Seilschaften (2010-2013). In the award-winning political series, she played the lonely and alcohol-loving journalist Hanne Holm alongside Sidse Babett Knudsen , Pilou Asbæk and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen .

In 2008 the artist Jesper Just shot the actress in his internationally presented short films A Vicious Undertow , A Room of One's Own and A Voyage of Dwelling . In 2009 Hansen took on the part as the wicked witch in the fairy tale film De vilde svaner with Stine Fischer Christensen . Excursions to British television followed with the series Above Suspicion: Deadly Intent (2011) and the film The Lady Vanishes (2012).

Private life

Benedikt Hansen lives in Frederiksberg and is in a relationship with her Danish colleague Viggo Sommer . She had two previous marriages with the writer, actor and director Gerz Feigenberg (1983–1993) and the former director of the Royal Danish Theater Michael Christiansen (1998–2007).
