Life

Bengt Fosshag (Foßhag) grew up with his aunt in the Vogelsberg region together with his sister and two cousins . His father died in the war and his mother died two years later. His grandfather, the Königstadt teacher and local researcher Adam Fosshag (1879–1956), awakened his enthusiasm for foreign continents and especially for Africa . Fosshag's artistic talent was recognized and promoted by his uncle, a hobby painter and member of a Frankfurt artist group. He has been based in Rüsselsheim since he started school.

Fosshag studied graphic design at the Werkkunstschule in Offenbach am Main . After completing his studies, he worked in advertising departments and studios in Wiesbaden and Offenbach and as an automobile designer at Opel in Rüsselsheim. He then worked as an art director at various advertising agencies .

Fosshag has been working as a freelance graphic designer, graphic designer and illustrator since 1983, and for many years he ran his own studio in Frankfurt am Main . He created numerous illustrations and vignettes , such as for newspapers , magazines and other publications. He also created book illustrations for several books , such as children's books as well as for a number of anthologies of the editorial duo Andrea C. Busch and Almuth Heuner with crime - short stories . The crime series published by Hildesheimer Gerstenberg Verlag was well received by the public, not least because of Fosshag's multiple award-winning illustrations. The series was partly published in its eighth edition and individual books in the series were also published in Poland , Estonia and Switzerland , as translations into French or into the respective national language.

His clients include newspaper publishers such as the FAZ (vignettes for articles in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung ), book publishers such as Gerstenberg Verlag, Verlag Herder and Eichborn Verlag , as well as institutions and companies such as the Rüsselsheim adult education center, the nature youth in the Nature Conservation Union ( NAJU ) and the Frankfurter Volksbank .

In addition, he created freelance work as a graphic designer and graphic artist. In his hometown of Rüsselsheim he had exhibitions at the Kunstverein Rüsselsheim, in the Rathaus rotunda and in the Opel factory hall "A1". Fosshag is involved in the cultural field in Rüsselsheim and in the royal cities that were incorporated into Rüsselsheim in 1956 ; Among other things, he is one of the initiators of the “illust_ratio” series, has overall responsibility for the illustrations for the “Rüsselsheimer Edition” and is co-editor of the “Königstädter Chronik”.

Fosshag received several awards and prizes for his work. His best-known illustration is the pink elephant , which Deutsche Bahn used to advertise rail travel in the 1980s ( Pink Weeks ) .

Fosshag is also known as a collector of tribal art from Africa and Asia. Among other things, he collects exhibits such as couscous vessels from Tunisia , watch lions from Sri Lanka and lute instruments from East India , sarindas and single-stringed dhodro banams , on which he also published specialist articles.
