Wolfram Hänel (born March 7, 1956 in Fulda ) is a German writer ; he also writes under the pseudonyms Jan Andersen , Kurt Appaz , Mary Padreigh , Freda Wolff and Ulrike Wolff . He was best known as an author of children's and youth literature .

Live and act

Wolfram Hänel attended the Leibniz School in Hanover, at that time still a pure high school for boys . Later about his laced with fear school, he wrote the autobiographical embossed novel class reunion. Confessions of a former high school student . He studied German and English at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Hanover and worked as a poster painter and theater photographer ( Landesbühne Hannover ), advertising copywriter, trainee lawyer, game inventor and dramaturge before he started to write.

His first children's book was published in 1987 ( Willi Wolle ) by Rowohlt Verlag . With a focus on literature for children and young people , he has so far published more than 100 novels, stories and picture books and translated them into a total of 25 languages. From 1988 to 1991 he was a resident author at the Theaterwerkstatt Hannover (most important production: Aidsfieber , together with Peter Henze, actor: including Heio von Stetten , musician: Laurent Simonetti ). Both as Kurt Appaz and under his own name, he addressed adults with several novels and six plays. From 2014, Hänel - together with Ulrike Gerold - published a Scandinavian thriller series under the pseudonym Freda Wolff , and Dietmar Bär read the first audio book . In 2015, as Jan Andersen, he started an adventure series (from 10 years) with the series title Dusty . Also in 2015, Haarmanns Erbe, his first interactive crime novel, was published, in which the readers of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung had a say in the plot and could appear in various roles themselves. In 2019, Hänel changed publisher and genre and since then has published two family novels at Ullstein Verlag together with Ulrike Gerold , which are set in the 1950s.

Hänel is a member of the Friedrich Bödecker Circle and is on the road all year round with readings in schools and libraries. At readings from his books aimed at adults, he performed together with the writers Hartmut El Kurdi and Kersten Flenter as well as with various actors (including Dietmar Bär, Max Tidof and Laetitia Mazzotti ) as well as with the rock musician Arndt Schulz (ex- Jane , guitar and singing).

In 2001, Hänel was awarded the Kurt Morawietz Prize for Literature as “one of the most complex writers in the German-speaking world” and the Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize in 2003.

Since 2017 he and Ulrike Gerold have been patrons of the outpatient children's and youth hospice service in Hanover. As the successor to Gudrun Pausewang , Hänel has been the patron of the Burgdorf literary competition since 2020 .

Wolfram Hänel has a daughter together with the dramaturge Ulrike Gerold. He lives and works with Gerold in Hanover and in Berlin-Kreuzberg , occasionally near Kilmore Quay in County Wexford in Ireland .
