Benjamin Walther (born September 10, 1974 in Dresden ) is a German artist and theater director .

Life

Benjamin Walther grew up in Dresden. After attending the Kreuzschule , he studied history, philosophy and art history at the Humboldt University and the Technical University in Berlin from 1996 to 1998 .

Already during his school days and his studies he worked at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden , the Schauspiel Leipzig and the Berliner Ensemble a . a. with Heiner Müller , Peter Zadek and Wolfgang Engel . In 1998 he started working as an assistant director at the Landesbühne Wilhelmshaven, where he directed a report for an academy by Franz Kafka and Liebestoll by Sam Shepard . For Liebestoll , he was nominated as the best young director in the annual survey by the trade journal Theater heute . In 2000 he moved to the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus as an assistant director . Here he worked closely with Frank-Patrick Steckel and Jürgen Gosch . In addition, he continued his beginning work as a director in Düsseldorf and founded the theater in the theater museum with the dramaturge Anna Haas . During this time the productions “ The Good Thief” by Conor McPherson and bash by Neil LaBute were created . With this work he was invited to the international theater meeting auawirleben in Bern in 2002 . After a competition for young European directors of the Union de Théatres de l'Europe UTE , he directed internationally at the Teatrul Bulandra in Bucharest and at the Dramaten in Stockholm . Since 2002 he has directed the theaters Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Staatstheater Darmstadt , Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel and the Betty Nansen Teatret in Copenhagen . He was also in-house director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum .

Since 2008, he has been part of the artist duo Awst & Walther as a performer and visual artist , whose work has been shown in numerous national and international solo and group exhibitions and is represented in important art collections (including KW Institute for Contemporary Art , Kunstverein Braunschweig , Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg , National Museum Cardiff , Nassau Art Association , Moscow Biennale and Boros Collection ). Benjamin Walther taught as a lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts , the University of Siegen and the Cologne International School of Design .
