Bernd II. Von Maltzan , or Der Böse Bernd , during his lifetime Bernd II. Von Moltzan (* before 1474; † 1525 in Wolde ), was a member of the Mecklenburg noble family Maltzan , who was best known as a robber baron .

Life

State sovereignty over the Maltzan possessions in Wolde was claimed by both Mecklenburg and Pomerania . Bernd's ancestors had lived at Wolde Castle since 1428 .

In 1474, Bernd is said to have been involved in an attack on the Mecklenburg Duke Magnus II , who was traveling to Stettin in preparation for his wedding . In 1490 he was on trial in Wolgast. He was accused of having abused his office in the bailiwick of the state of Loitz by collecting taxes and duties for himself. Furthermore, he had tried to eliminate the bailiff Peter Mynkas appointed by Duke Bogislaw X. of Pomerania. In the state of Treptow , too, he had levied duties and services without documentary proof of authorization. There was a feud with his cousin Hartwig von Moltzan from the eastern line of the family. When Bernd the judgment of 24./25. July 1490 failed to comply, his castle Wolde was besieged by Bogislaw X. with the help of troops from Greifswald , Stralsund , Anklam and Demmin . After the defenders' powder stores exploded and damaged the fortifications, the castle was captured and destroyed on August 29, 1491. Bernd, who fled to Brandenburg, filed a lawsuit with the emperor.

Through a relative of his wife Gödel von Alvensleben , the Havelberg Bishop Busso VIII von Alvensleben , he had acquired properties in the north-western Mark Brandenburg, with which he was enfeoffed on December 14, 1491 by Elector Johann Cicero von Brandenburg. Bernd was later captured and imprisoned in Demmin for two years. After he had to swear peace on July 28, 1498, he got his possessions and titles back.

On July 18, 1501, he bought Penzlin Castle from the Mecklenburg dukes , which had been in the Maltzans' lien since 1414. By enfeoffing him with Penzlin, he gained the title of ducal secret councilor of Mecklenburg. In 1505, Friedrich von Pfuel took Bernd's sons Joachim and Ludolf hostage during the Pfuels' feud with the Mecklenburg dukes. The two were only released two years later. On August 24, 1507, the feud was contractually resolved through the mediation of the Brandenburg Elector Joachim I Nestor , among other things Friedrich von Pfuel received 4500 gold guilders.

Bernd von Maltzan was married to Gödel (Gundeline) von Alvensleben († 1537) and probably had two sons. The eldest son was Joachim von Maltzan , an imperial field marshal.
