Bernhard Woytek (born August 16, 1974 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ancient historian and numismatist with a research focus on ancient numismatics .

Life

Bernhard Woytek is a son of the Austrian classical philologist Erich Woytek . From 1992 he studied ancient history and antiquity as well as numismatics at the University of Vienna . He completed his doctoral studies with research on Roman financial history and coinage from 49 to 42 BC. From. After graduation sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae on 12 March 2002 to the doctor of philosophy Woytek was a fundamental study for Empire coinage Emperor Trajan habilitation and received in 2009 at the University of Vienna, the teaching license (venia docendi) as a lecturer for the subject "Numismatics and history of money ".

Bernhard Woytek was a member of the Numismatic Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 2001 and has been a lecturer at the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna since the summer semester 2005 . He is the head of the “Documenta Antiqua” department at the Institute for Ancient Cultural History of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London . In 2013 he was elected a corresponding member in Germany of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and in 2019 he was elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
