Localization of Hessen in Germany

The Bieber observation tower in the Hessian city Offenbach am Main is a historical observation tower with a total height of 27 meters, which was built in 1882. The viewing platform is at a height of 24 meters.

The building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

history

Since 1880 there was a beautification association in Offenbach . The expansion and maintenance of walking paths were on his program, the setting up of benches and shelters and the construction of a lookout tower. The Bieberer Berg was chosen as the highest point in the area near the Offenbach district boundaries at that time, as it is ideal for strategic height measurements .

Initially, the association expected construction costs of 1,500 gold marks . At the opening in 1882, the construction costs had increased to 7,266 gold marks. This corresponds to around 54,000 euros based on today's purchasing power.

Although the tower fifteen meters from the Bieberer Gemarkungs limit on the district of Burgel stands and from Verschönerungsverein Offenbach was built, it bears the name since its creation Bieberer lookout tower - probably because of its geographical proximity to Bieber and his location on the Bieberer mountain. However, it has always been considered the landmark of the Offenbach district of Bieber, within whose limits it is now also located.

building

Erected on an artificial hill and surrounded by locust trees, the massive tower with a square floor plan stands on a widening base . It is divided by color through a construction in light sandstone and dark red brick . The tower is divided into six stories by arched windows. The parapet of the observation platform is lavishly cantilevered and decorated according to models from the castle building . Above the entrance is a keystone with the inscription ? Built in 1882 . Above and next to the entrance door there are more stone tablets; In the engraved stone block to the left of the door there is the following text: "Height of the tower 24mtr from threshold to platform". After entering the tower via the approximately 40 cm high threshold, the ascent to the platform is initially via 108 steps of a right-turning sandstone staircase with 17 intermediate landings, in the upper area via a metal spiral staircase with 19 steps, which is led through an octagonal 2.6 meter high metal superstructure through a door leads to the 24.4 meter high viewing platform. The surrounding parapet, on which a flagpole is attached, rises above the platform by 1.25 meters.

With the staircase superstructure, the tower reaches a total height of 27 meters. It offers a panoramic view of the city up to the Spessart , Odenwald and Taunus and thus a distance of almost 200 kilometers.

The building is a listed building .

use

After the beautification association was dissolved, the Offenbach Hiking Association took over the tower into its care in 1922 . In 1943 the city of Offenbach took it over. In 1954 the city leased the tower to a citizen of Bieber. The tower deteriorated and could not be entered at all.

In 1983 the association Die Offenbacher 03 and the Musikverein Eintracht sponsored the tower and have been looking after it ever since.

From May to September the tower can be climbed on Sundays and public holidays and is the location of various local events.
