From 2001 the prize was awarded thematically. The prize money was CHF 200,000 (CHF 50,000 freely available prize money, CHF 150,000 for project-related activities). This made the Binding Forest Prize the most valuable Swiss environmental prize . The prize was awarded for the last time in 2016.

Goal setting

The main idea behind the Binding Forest Prize was sustainable forest management . It was used to award forest owners, forest companies and organizations that use the forest in an exemplary manner in accordance with the principles of sustainability, taking into account the ecological potential and the social environment and implementing strategies for long-term economic success. The prize was intended to encourage forest owners and forest staff to provide impetus for sustainable forest management.

In addition to the Sophie and Karl Binding Foundation, based in Basel , which aligns the Binding Forest price, the couple Sophie and Karl Binding has in Schaan in Liechtenstein established based Binding Foundation, the since 1986 Binding Award for nature and environmental protection gives.

Emergence

In accordance with the wishes of the founding couple, the Sophie and Karl Binding Foundation has also supported environmental and nature conservation projects since it was founded in 1963. In the mid-1980s, the Board of Trustees under the leadership of the President, Hans Meier, began to focus the Foundation's grants on specific funding purposes. Together with the forest science professor Hansjürg Steinlin , the Binding Prize for exemplary forest care was created, later called the Binding Forest Prize for short. Steinlin was President of the Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1999 and shaped the profile of the award. Between 2000 and 2011, the Board of Trustees was chaired by Peter Bachmann, Professor of Forest Sciences at ETH Zurich. Under his leadership, the award was further developed, so from 2001 onwards the award was given under an annual theme.

Award winners

The prize was awarded exclusively to associations of private forest owners and corporations under private or public law . Direct applications from forest owners were not possible. Important topics were the stabilization of the Swiss protective forests, the promotion of biodiversity, the sustainable use of wood, environmental education and the design of a natural recreation area.

Selection process

In order to determine the award winners, institutions from the Swiss forestry sector were asked annually to propose award winners for one of the main topics. The Board of Trustees for the Binding Forest Prize examined the proposals and selects the winner, which it proposes to the Board of Trustees of the Sophie and Karl Binding Foundation for election with a reason. The board of trustees for the Binding Forest Prize was made up of experts from Swiss forestry. Most recently, these were Georg Schoop (President), Barbara Allgaier, Anna Barbara Remund, Pascal Junod and Raphael Schwitter.
