Bing Russell
Neil Oliver "Bing" Russell (born May 5, 1926 in Brattleboro , Vermont , † April 8, 2003 in Thousand Oaks , California ) was an American actor . The later owner of a baseball club was the father of Kurt Russell .
Life
Russell was initially a professional baseball player, but had already taken up acting in high school and began his film and television career in 1951. In the first few years he had very small roles and mostly he was not mentioned in the credits, for example in the film noir classic Rattennest and in the horror film classic Tarantula . Soon he focused on the western genre ; so he was in almost every successful western series of the 1950s and 1960s such as The Smoking Guns , West of Santa Fe , The People of Shiloh Ranch and A Thousand Miles of Dust . He became known to worldwide television audiences for his role as Deputy Clem Foster in Bonanza , which he played in 55 episodes between 1961 and 1972. He has also appeared in supporting roles in western classics such as Rio Bravo and The Magnificent Seven . In the 1970s he was mostly seen in guest roles in various television series; He also appeared at the side of his son Kurt Russell in the Disney productions Superhirn in tennis shoes and It cracks, it hisses, there is nothing to see . In 1979 he starred in John Carpenter's biography Elvis as Vernon Presley , the father of Elvis Presley , played by his son Kurt. He appeared in a few of his son's film projects in the 1980s, but had shifted his focus from acting back to sport.
Bing Russell owned the Portland Mavericks baseball team , which competed in the minor league . His grandchildren are former major league baseball player Matt Franco and actor and former ice hockey player Wyatt Russell .
