Birgit Birnbacher (born July 16, 1985 in Schwarzach im Pongau ) is an Austrian writer .

Life

Birnbacher dropped out of school early, first did an apprenticeship, then went to development aid to Ethiopia and India for a while . She later did her Matura and studied sociology and social sciences . Until 2018 she worked as a social worker and sociologist in community and neighborhood work. At the same time she began to write literary and since 2012 also to publish.

Her literary work has received several awards, including a. she received the Rauris Promotion Prize and the Irseer Pegasus Author's Prize . Her debut novel Wir ohne Wal , which appeared in 2016, was awarded the Jürgen Ponto Foundation's Literature Prize and was nominated for the Rauris Literature Prize and the Alpha Literature Prize, and in December 2016 it was on the ORF's best list .

In June 2019 she was invited to the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize on the recommendation of Stefan Gmünder and won with her prose text The Cabinet . The jury praised Birnbacher's story as a "micro-study of living conditions". In the laudatory speech, the language of Birnbacher's text was praised as "crackling" and "stirring". Her second novel Ich bei mir Seite landed in May 2020 at number one on the ORF best list.

Birgit Birnbacher lives with her son, born in 2016, as a freelance writer in Salzburg .
