Geographical location

The unforested Birkenberg rises in the center of the Ohm Mountains just under 1 km north of Kaltohmfeld , a north-northeast part of Leinefelde-Worbis . The mountain can be reached via a dead end street that leads from Kaltohmfeld towards the summit. Only the last part of the way has to be covered on foot.

history

During the GDR era, there was a Soviet Army base on the Birkenberg , which has since been demolished and renatured. Only the barrier to the former garrison and the up to six meter high raised foundations for the radar systems have been preserved . In 2015, several information steles and seating were set up for the tourist development of the mountain.

Possibility of viewing

From the top of the almost treeless Birkenberg there are beautiful views when visibility is good: in the north you can see the Harz with the Brocken . The Kyffhäuser rises from the plain to the east or Nordhausen . In the south, the Dün and the Thuringian Forest with the Großer Inselsberg can be seen. In the west you can see Die Gleichen , the Dransfelder Stadtwald and, for example , the Kaufunger Wald east of Kassel ( Hesse ) and the Hohe Meißner .
