Black Box is an American television series that premiered on April 24, 2014 on ABC . Kelly Reilly plays the protagonist of the series, a neurologist suffering from bipolar disorder .

Catherine Black is a famous neurologist who tries to hide her bipolar disorder from people around her. The only person outside of her family who originally knows about it is her psychiatrist Dr. Helen Hartramph, who has been treating Catherine since her first onset of the disease. Catherine's mother, who also suffered from bipolar disorder, died of suicide .

The broadcaster ABC decided not to produce a pilot and ordered 13 episodes straight away. As of December 3, 2013, all outdoor scenes were filmed on the Columbia University campus . On March 31, 2014, the rest of the scenes at Wave Hill in Riverdale were shot to an end. In August 2014, ABC announced the discontinuation of the series.

From April 24 to May 29, 2014, the first six episodes of the series aired on ABC on Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. After a two-week break, since June 19, 2014, the remaining seven episodes of the series will be broadcast on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC. On June 24, 2014, the penultimate and final episode of the series was broadcast at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The series premiere was seen by 6.60 million viewers and achieved a target group rating of 1.5 and the following episode 5.41 million viewers.

The Tele München Gruppe owns the broadcasting rights in Germany . On July 24, 2014 it was announced that the Tele München Gruppe had sold the television series to Amazon Instant Video .

While the series has so far only been available on demand in the USA, Concorde Home Entertainment released it in German-speaking countries on December 4, 2014 on DVD and Blu-ray .
