Bob Bain

Robert F. "Bob" Bain (born January 26, 1924 in Chicago ; † June 2018 ) was an American studio and jazz musician ( guitar , also bass guitar , banjo , mandolin ) and arranger , who was popular with the general public primarily through his Participation in the Tonight Show became known.

Live and act

Bain came to Los Angeles in the 1930s, where he finished his education. After graduating from school, he worked as a professional musician, initially in the trio of Joe Wolverton, Les Paul's mentor . Bain played in 1943 with Freddie Slack , with which the first recordings were made, in 1944 in Tommy Dorsey's band , for whom he also arranged. Around 1946 he moved to Bob Crosby before forming his own band, San Fernando Playboys . In the post-war years he worked with André Previn , Peggy Lee , Nat King Cole ("Unforgettable"), Sammy Davis Jr. , Billie Holiday (" God Bless the Child ", 1950), Harry James , Herb Jeffries , Billy Eckstine and with Frank Sinatra , on whose recordings for Capitol Records he participated. ( I've Got You Under My Skin ).

From the late 1950s, Bain was mainly employed as an arranger and session musician for RCA, Capitol and other labels; so he worked a. with recordings of Martin Denny , Mahalia Jackson , Matt Monro and Gene Vincent . For Capitol he also recorded a number of instrumental numbers on singles ("Fender Bender") and LPs under his own name, stylistically based on popular styles of pop and rock & roll. In 1964 he accompanied Junior Mance with his brass ensemble (including Al Porcino , Don Fagerquist , Manny Klein , Milt Bernhart , Pete Candoli , Ray Triscari , Vern Friley ) .

In 1959 he was involved in Henry Mancini's score for Peter Gunn . He can also be heard in the soundtracks to television series such as Bonanza , Smoking Colts , M * A * S * H , Kobra, Take Over and Detective Rockford - just give us a call . He worked u. a. also with Elmer Bernstein , Lalo Schifrin , Billy May , Shelly Manne and played for 22 years in Doc Severinsen ’s Tonight Show Band . Bain performed well into the 2010s, most recently with John Pisano in 2015 . In the field of jazz he was involved in 210 recording sessions between 1943 and 2008.
