Bob Foster (born April 27, 1938 in Borger , Texas , † November 21, 2015 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) was an American boxer.

career

As an amateur, Foster finished second in the middleweight division at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago .

In 1961 he began his professional career. On May 24, 1968 he was with a knockout in the fourth round against Dick Tiger WBA and WBC world light heavyweight champion. The knockout was so brutal that it built a reputation as the toughest racket in light heavyweight history. The previously unbeaten Mike Quarry (36-0) and Olympic champion Chris Finnegan were also defeated prematurely.

On November 18, 1970 he faced world champion Joe Frazier to win the heavyweight title, but lost by knockout in the second round. In his next attempt in the heavyweight division two years later, he met the 19 kg heavier Muhammad Ali and lost again prematurely. He lost all of his five heavyweight bouts.

After a happy draw with Jorge Víctor Ahumada, Foster put down his light heavyweight title in 1974 and announced his retirement, but continued to play a few more meaningless fights until his final career end in 1978.

The Ring Magazine chose him behind Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore the third best light heavyweight of all time. In 1990 Foster was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
