Bodo Carl Emil Steigerthal (born October 27, 1872 in Köchingen ; † October 5, 1937 in Braunschweig ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor , church councilor and member of the Braunschweig state parliament .

Life

Bodo Steigerthal was born in Köchingen in the Duchy of Braunschweig in 1872 , where his father was a pastor. His uncle was the railway director Albert Steigerthal . After graduating from high school, Bodo Steigerthal studied Protestant theology in Greifswald and Leipzig . He held his first pastor's position from 1901 to 1905 in Riddagshausen , before he was the clergyman of the Evangelical Association for Inner Mission in the Duchy of Braunschweig from 1905 to 1914 . During this activity he founded the Remenhof in Volkmarode in 1911, based on the model of the Bethel Institutions established by Pastor Friedrich von Bodelschwingh . A lively fundraising activity enabled the association to purchase 30 acres of land on which thatched half-timbered houses were built for accommodation. Steigerthal began caring for alcoholic men in 1911 , before taking care of endangered and orphaned children and adolescents on October 1, 1918 , shortly before the end of the First World War . The children were prepared for life in agricultural and artisanal foster families. The number of orphans rose from eight at the beginning to 125 later. Steigerthal's founding in 1939 developed into the Remenhof Foundation , which is still in existence today .

Steigerthal took over the pastoral position in Ölper in 1914 , which he held until his retirement in 1934. He was a member of the DVP , for which he was a member of the Braunschweig State Parliament from 1919 to 1927. He belonged to the moderate wing of his party and, according to Dietrich Kuessner, was a "moderate and willing to compromise member of parliament who also saw himself as a liaison between the church leadership and parliament." Steigerthal last lived on Schleinitzstrasse in Braunschweig. He died in October 1937 at the age of 64 in Braunschweig.
