Boris Sergeyevich Sokolov

Boris Sergejewitsch Sokolow ( Russian Борис Сергеевич Соколов ; * March 27th July / April 9th  1914 greg. In Wyschni Volotschok ; † September 2, 2013 in Moscow ) was a Russian geologist , paleontologist and university professor .

Life

Sokolow, son of the village fieldman Sergei Borissowitsch Sokolow, worked as an electrician in Leningrad after attending school in Vyshny Volotschok . He then studied at the Leningrad University (LGU). In 1937 he graduated with honors. From 1936 he took part in geological exploration work in Central Asia . 1937–1941 he was an assistant at the chair for paleontologist at the LGU.

Before the start of the German-Soviet war , Sokolow was the leader of an expeditionary force in Xinjiang . 1941-1943 he was the head of the Geology squads of the People's Commissariats of the USSR for non-ferrous metals and petroleum studies in the Tarim Basin , in the Turpan Depression and in the Dzungaria in the Tian Shan through. 1943-1958 Sokolow headed the laboratory of the All Union Research Institute for Oil of the USSR. From 1945 he taught at the LGU.

In 1947 Sokolow became a candidate and in 1955 a doctorate in geological-mineralogical sciences . In 1958 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, from 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)) and now headed the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Department (SO) of the AN-SSSR in Novosibirsk Department of Paleontology and Stratigraphy , which he made an internationally recognized research center. 1961–1965 he was a professor at the Department of General Geology at the Novosibirsk University (NGU). In 1965 he founded the Department of Geological History and Paleontology there, which he headed until 1975. In 1968 he was elected a real member of the AN-SSSR. In 1975 he became a member of the Presidium of the AN-SSSR.

A central theme of Sokolov's scientific work was the geology and paleontology of the Precambrian . One focus of work was the Vendium in Russia , which roughly corresponds to the Ediacarium . His study of tabulata and other corals of the Paleozoic made important contributions to evolution .

From 1976 Sokolov worked in Moscow. 1977–1992 he headed the laboratory of the Institute for Paleontology. After Sergei Mikhailovich Nikolski's death in 2012, Sokolov was the oldest member of the RAN.

Sokolov was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery in Moscow .
