Emergence

Songwriting

In spring 2017 Long Distance Calling played a special tour on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of their debut album Satellite Bay , on which the band only played instrumental songs. Later that year, the band had to do without singer Petter Carlsen , who lives in Norway , at a festival . According to bass player Jan Hoffmann, the feeling on stage was very good for the musicians at these concerts and the band noticed that they wanted to play instrumental music. In addition, the musicians came to the conclusion that they didn't feel as comfortable with singing as they thought. Declining audience numbers at concerts and negative comments on social networks did the rest. The band then withdrew to their rehearsal room for several months and wrote the new songs during various jam sessions .

“Without having to worry about where the singing fits and what works and what doesn't. We just wanted to write the songs in the rehearsal room like we used to do in the past and put it into practice. It was a lot of fun and relaxed work. "

Guitarist Florian Füntmann added that it was more fun for the band to meet, jam and record the results instead of everyone recording something for themselves and sending the files back and forth. The musicians refrained from setting their own specifications for the album and describe Boundless as probably the purest LDC album of all time, as there are no guest musicians and no vocals. The band also took care of the electronic effects itself. At the same time, Boundless is also the hardest album in the band's history.

Recordings

Like the previous album, Trips , Boundless was produced by the band and Vincent Sorg , the latter being less involved in the songwriting than Trips and having less influence on the end result. According to Florian Füntmann, the band actually wanted to produce the entire album themselves, but then decided to work with Sorg again. According to Füntmann, Vincent Sorg was more of an executive producer and gave the musicians tips on arranging the songs and also took care of the samples and electronics. The drums were recorded in the Principal Studios in Senden , guitar and bass in the Sound Ranger Studio in Münster . The album was not recorded live, but the band strived for a more raw and direct sound than before. Vincent Sorg also did the mixing and mastering . The only guest musicians on Boundless were Eddie Northund and David Miles, who played the cello and trumpet respectively on the song Like a River .

publication

In addition to the regular CD version, a special edition CD was released, which contains the song Flashback as a bonus . In addition, the album will be released on LP on black, dark green and transparent mangenta vinyl. All LP versions also contain the song Flashback and the complete album on CD. For the song Out There one was music video rotated, the band when in one hiking in the Dolomites can see. The album cover was also created during this hike. The idea to shoot a video while hiking came from the drummer Janosch Rathmer . Another music video was shot in the studio while recording the song Ascending . In September 2018, a music video for the song Like a River was released .

According to Jan Hoffmann, the album title Boundless has two meanings. On the one hand, it symbolizes the subject of travel , whereby for many fans of Long Distance Calling the albums are a kind of "travel in the head ". At the same time the band “swam free” with this album and made music “without limits or corsets”. The musicians “just did it instead of thinking too much about it”. The order of the eight songs on the album symbolizes the path of the musicians from below to the mountain top . The song Like a River pays homage to the Italian composer Ennio Morricone . In its original form, the song should represent a kind of calm in an album based on hardness

The band would "release one of their strongest albums (again) from the shackles of conventional songwriting". Blum rated the album with 8.5 out of ten points. According to Frank Thiessies from the German magazine Metal Hammer , Long Distance Callings "remains the greatest strength of the ability to keep the listener on the line even with the pieces being played for long periods of time and to be immediately accessible". The album would be "a great acoustic trip that can tell and evoke more than more classic rock band lineups with thousands of sung words". Thiessies awarded six out of seven points.
