For Tom Küppers from the German magazine Metal Hammer, "newcomer Martin Fischer turns out to be the missing, singing piece of the puzzle in the band cosmos", as he "adds another musical dimension to the consistently complex, prog compositions". He compared the album with Faith No More's work Angel Dust from 1992 and gave it the highest rating with seven out of seven points. Peter Kubaschk from the online magazine Powermetal.de described The Flood Inside as “just an excellent album”. While the four instrumental numbers “represent the usual class of the band”, Kubaschk states that Martin Fischer's vocals are a little “lacking in color” and rated the album with nine out of ten points. Matthias Olejnik from the online magazine Metal.de spoke of the “high point of the band's career so far”, as the songs “are bursting with versatility and playful ability”. It was given nine out of ten points. For Martin Iordanidis of the music magazine Visions , "The song experiment [...] was in principle a success", but would have liked more and awarded eight out of twelve possible points.

The Flood Inside entered the German album charts at number 33 , three places higher than the previous album . For the first time, Long Distance Calling was also able to place itself in the charts outside of Germany. In Switzerland, the album debuted at number 79.
