Youngblood is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian hard rock band Audrey Horne . It was released on January 25, 2013 in Norway and on February 1, 2013 in German-speaking countries on Napalm Records .

Emergence

Songwriting

The songs for the album were created in 2012. In contrast to the first three albums, where the music was mainly written by the guitarists Arve Isdal and Thomas Tofthagen , the songs were created through joint jam sessions in the rehearsal room. Bassist Espen Lien was also involved , who has supported the band as a live musician since 2009 and finally became a permanent member of the band.

“At first it was difficult and strange, especially for Thomas [Tofthagen] and me, to give up some“ control ”. But we quickly found out that we could get more out of our potential with this way of working "

- Arve Isdal

According to Isdal, new signing Espen Lien played a big part in the fact that some songs are more simply structured than in the past. When Isdal suggested playing repeated riffs with different notes , Lien suggested keeping the riffs simple and made comparisons with the band Van Halen . Many songs have been built around the vocal lines written by singer Torkjell Rød . Another difference to the previous album is the lower number of harmony chants and the higher tempo of the songs.

Recordings

For September of that year a European tour was planned in the opening act of Kill Devil Hill , but it had to be canceled. Thereupon the recordings began in the Duper Studios in Bergen , Norway, under the direction of Even Johansen. Guitar, bass and drums were recorded live. The guest musician was the sound engineer Ivar Sandøy, who contributed castanets to the song This Ends Here . The keyboards played a Kim Gulbrandsen, who is part of the Live occupation of the band for years. The vocals and keyboards were recorded in Evan Johansen's studio. Mixed and mastered was Youngblood Jørgen Træen. The recordings took around three weeks in total.

publication

In November 2012 the band signed a contract with their new record company Napalm Records. Singer Torkjell Rød justified the step with the fact that Napalm Records has tried hardest for the band and that the band has priority there. Another argument for the musicians was that Napalm Records has increasingly signed hard rock bands in recent years.

In addition to the regular version of the album, there is a limited edition which, in addition to the eleven songs on the album, also includes the song I Wanna Know You and demo versions of the songs This Ends Here and The Open Sea . In addition, there are two versions on record which, in addition to the bonus tracks of the limited CD version, also contain a demo version of the song Show and Tell . The records also come with a CD and a poster . The version on transparent vinyl is limited to 400 copies, the version on sky blue vinyl is limited to 100 copies.

The album cover was designed by singer Torkjell Rød and is based on the cover motif of the Kiss album Rock and Roll Over . According to Rød, the motif should express the unity within the band and the new level of energy that the music has on the album. For the song Redemption Blues one was music video rotated.

According to guitarist Arve Isdal , the album title Youngblood is supposed to express how the musicians felt during the recordings.

“We all turned our thoughts back to when we were 16 years old. Playing in a band and making music was the only thing that was really important. "

- Arve Isdal

Redemption Blues is a song about drinking alcohol . The theme song is about the fact that experience and honesty always triumphs over greed for money. As an example, singer Torkjell Rød cited that if you sit down and try to write a hit , you usually fail . However, if you try to write a good song, people will recognize it and turn it into a hit.

In There Goes a Lady is about a painful relationship that should stop the man, but it does not want. Singer Torkjell Rød uses the sirens from Greek mythology as a metaphor . Show and Tell criticizes Facebook for collecting all the information that is revealed to the social network and for getting an idea of the users.

The song Pretty Little Sunshine is dedicated to all the crazy people who make this world more interesting. This Ends Here is about the illegitimate son of a pirate who reaches a point in his life from which there is no going back.
