The " Bourbon virus " ( BOUV ) is a species of the virus genus Thogotovirus from the Orthomyxoviridae family that was discovered in 2014 . It is an enveloped virus with single-stranded RNA with negative polarity as its genome . The species has not yet been confirmed by the ICTV as of September 2019.
properties
The " Bourbon virus " was first detected in spring 2014 in Bourbon County in eastern Kansas and named after it. By February 2015, the CDC had found a fatal case of illness in a farmer caused by the virus . It is believed that tick or insect bites are responsible for transmitting the virus. The spread of the virus in the population is so far unknown. The closest relatives of the " Bourbon virus " are found in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.
Symptoms
In a 2014 death attributed to the virus, the affected man suffered from fever, fatigue, rash , headache and body aches, nausea and vomiting. It has not yet been proven whether the virus was the sole cause of the man's death.
therapy
There are no approved drugs for the therapy of the Bourbon virus, so preventive treatment against insect bites is recommended, e.g. B. with diethyltoluamide (DEET).
