The Boutonne is a river in France that runs in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It rises in the middle of the village of Chef-Boutonne , drains generally in a south-westerly direction and flows into the Charente after 99 kilometers at Carillon , in the municipality of Cabariot , as a right tributary . On its way, the Boutonne crosses the Deux-Sèvres and Charente-Maritime departments .

The Boutonne is canalized over a length of 31 kilometers from its mouth to Saint-Jean-d'Angély and is navigable by ships. It has 4 locks for the Becquey ship standard (30.50 × 5.50 m), as well as a mobile weir at the mouth, which is already exposed to the tides and can only be opened at certain tide levels. The cargo shipping has no importance of tourism with sports and houseboats is here but barely penetrated.
