Tonnay-Boutonne is a French commune with 1,151 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Poitou-Charentes ); it belongs to the arrondissement Saint-Jean-d'Angély and is part of the canton Saint-Jean-d'Angély (until 2015: canton Tonnay-Boutonne ). The inhabitants are called boutonnais .

Tonnay-Boutonne is located about 25 kilometers north-north-west of Saintes on the river Boutonne in the Saintonge . Tonnay-Boutonne is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Crépin in the north and northwest, Annezay in the north, Saint-Loup in the north and northeast, Chantemerle-sur-la-Soie and Torxé in the east, Les Nouillers in the southeast, Archingeay in the south, and Puy -du-Lac to the south and south-west, Saint-Coutant-le-Grand to the west and south-west and Moragne to the west.
