The Braemar is a cruise ship originally commissioned by Effjohn International Crown Cruise Line as the Crown Dynasty .

history

Crown Cruise Line

The ship was commissioned on December 12, 1989 from Union Naval de Levante SA, Valencia . The keel was laid under hull number 198 on March 21, 1991, the launch on January 31, 1992. Due to a fire in the storage rooms and the resulting damage, delivery to the shipping company was delayed by a few months. On June 25, 1993, the ship was handed over to the new owner, Crown Cruise Line, Panama , who chartered it to Cunard . The Crown Dynasty sailed under the flag of Panama. On July 3, 1993, she moored in Southampton , from where she began her maiden voyage to the US east coast on July 7, 1993 .

Norwegian Cruise Line

In March 1997 the Majesty Cruise Line chartered the ship and used it for their cruises under the name Crown Majesty . Later in the year it was sold to Norwegian Cruise Line , which used it under the name Norwegian Dynasty .

Commodore Cruise Line

In October 1999, the Commodore Cruise Line in Panama bought the ship and renamed it again to the previous name Crown Majesty . On December 18, 1999, the first cruises started under the new operator.

Fred Olsen Cruises

After the Commodore Cruise Line went bankrupt in February 2000, Fred bought . Olsen Cruise Lines took the ship on May 11, 2001 and renamed it Braemar . From June 20 to July 22, 2001, extensive renovation and renewal measures took place at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg . There were u. a. Large parts of the interior have been renewed with the help of designers. The first cruise under the new owner left Dover , England on August 11, 2001 .

In December 2007, the preparatory work for the extension of the ship began at Schichau Seebeck Shipyard in Bremerhaven . On April 5th, 2008 it was towed from Bremerhaven to Blohm + Voss Repair in Hamburg, where it was extended by around 32 m from 163.81 to 195.82 m by July 2008.

The Braemar is primarily aimed at older British passengers. The language on board is English and the payment is made in British pounds.

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , four crew members and one passenger tested positive for the virus while staying in Curacao in mid-March 2020 . The ship anchored on March 14 at Freeport in the Bahamas , the flag state . Fuel, provisions and medicine were added, but the authorities did not allow people on board to leave the Braemar . Finally, Cuba agreed to allow the ship to dock. From there, the 667 British passengers are to be flown to their homeland.

Sister ship

When the Crown Dynasty was built , there was already a sister ship, the Crown Jewel , which entered service in 1992. This was used from 1995 to 2009 as the superstar Gemini and since 2009 as the Gemini .
