college

Before college, Edwards attended Bishop Gallagher High School in Harper Woods , Michigan . From there he went to the University of Michigan after three years and played college football there . In his first year, however, he was hardly ever used and only got three passports . But in his second season the breakthrough in the Wolverines team followed . Edwards was used in all Michigan regular season games, catching 67 passes for a gain of 1,035 yards. At the end of the season he and his team also won the Outback Bowl . In the following year 2003 he managed to even improve his performance with 85 trapped passes and a gain of 1138 yards. He did so the following season, making him one of only nine players in college football history to gain more than 1,000 yards of space for three years in a row. He also received the Fred Biletnikoff Award in his senior year at college and was elected to the All-American First Team. Edwards also won the Rose Bowl with the Wolverines in 2003 and 2004 .

NFL

Cleveland Browns

The rookie season

After Edwards was selected as the third player in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns , it took some time before he signed his contract there, which is why he almost completely missed the start of the pre-season. When the season started, Edwards was first wide receiver number three in the Browns rankings, behind Antonio Bryant and Dennis Northcutt . Therefore, he was hardly ever used at the beginning and could not play at all due to an injury. In the middle of the season he then made the leap into the starting lineup of the Browns and replaced Dennis Northcutt there. At the end of the season, the Browns were then third in the AFC North together with the Baltimore Ravens and thus did not make it into the play-offs . Edwards then injured his knee at the end of the season and therefore had to use the entire summer break to get fit again.

Persistent failure with the Browns

Edwards while with the Browns

Regenerated from his injury, Edwards started the new season with the Browns on September 10, 2006. During the season, Edwards rose to the main wide receiver of the Browns because of an injury to his teammate Joe Jurevicius . He then held this role until the end of the season and caught a total of 61 passes for the Browns, who ended up last in the division. In the 2007 season, Edwards was followed by a final breakthrough. Through his trapped passes, he achieved a space gain of 1289 yards, making him second in the NFL behind Randy Moss . Due to his good performances he almost managed to lead the Browns back into the play-offs since 2002 . But the Browns narrowly missed this because they had the same record as the division winner, the Pittsburgh Steelers , with 10: 6 , but had lost both direct duels against them. Edwards was elected to the Pro Bowl during his most successful season with the Browns , making him the Browns' first wide receiver since Webster Slaughter in 1989 to receive this honor. Last season's successes naturally raised expectations in Cleveland. But both Edwards, who led the 2008 NFL in dropped passes (16), and the Browns failed to confirm their performances from last season and ended up in a disappointing last place in the division at the end of the season.

New York Jets

Arrival in New York

On October 7, 2009 Edwards moved to the New York Jets . In return, the Cleveland Browns got wide receiver Chansi Stuckey , linebacker Jason Trusnik , a third and a fifth round pick in the next NFL draft . In his first season with the Jets, he began using Rookie - Quarterback Mark Sanchez 35 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns . These achievements were enough for second place in the AFC East and to reach the wild card play-offs . There the Jets beat the Cincinnati Bengals before they could also defeat the San Diego Chargers in the second round . Edwards showed rather poor performance and only caught four passes for 56 yards. Then came the AFC Championship Game , in which the Jets met the Indianapolis Colts . In the game Edwards was able to catch an 81-yard pass and thus score the first points for the Jets, but in the end Indianapolis won clearly with 30:17.

The 2010 season

In his first full season with the New York Jets Edwards was able to increase his performance again and, statistically speaking, played his second best season in the NFL. After the end of the regular season with Edwards, the Jets were again second in the AFC East behind the New England Patriots and thus made it into the play-offs again. There they could return the favor with the Colts for the defeat in the last AFC Championship Game, which they achieved with a narrow 17:16 win. In the next play-off round, the Jets then had to play against their division rivals from New England . Edwards managed a touchdown in the game against the New England Patriots and after an hour the Jets had won 28:21. The Jets finally had to play the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers . But this time too, the Jets were denied entry into the Super Bowl due to a 24:19 defeat .

San Francisco 49ers

For the 2011 season, Braylon Edwards signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers . He returned to the Jets after a year and joined the Seattle Seahawks during the 2012 season .
