Brehmen , in Upper Sorbian Brěmjo ? / i , is a district of the community Großdubrau in the district of Bautzen in Saxony . The place belongs to the recognized Sorbian settlement area . Audio file / audio sample

Brehmen is located in Upper Lusatia, about 15 kilometers north of Bautzen in the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve . Surrounding towns are Jetscheba and Kauppa in the north, Sdier in the east, Zschillichau in the southeast, Großdubrau in the south and Crosta in the northwest.

The district road 7210 runs through Brehmen and connects the place with the federal road 156 from Bautzen to Weißwasser , which runs almost two kilometers east of the place .

Brehmen was first mentioned in a document as Brehnn in 1419 . In the following time the place name changed from Brehmen (1519) via Brennow (1574) and Brenn (1599) back to Brehmen in 1759. Around 1780 the place was registered as Bremen . From 1599 at the latest, the place was under the rule of the Milkel manor and the Bautzen cathedral monastery . Since the 17th century Brehmen belongs to the parish Klix.

Brehmen was an independent rural community until April 1, 1936, then the place was incorporated into Großdubrau. On July 25, 1952, Brehmen was assigned to the newly formed Bautzen district in the Dresden district . After the reunification , the place was in the Bautzen district in Saxony . From January 1, 1994 to July 31, 2008, Brehmen was in the old district of Bautzen , since the Saxon district reform of August 1, 2008 , the place has been in the district of Bautzen .

Population and language

For the year 1777 there were four possessed men , four gardeners and eleven cottagers in Brehmen . In 1834 the place had a total of 111 inhabitants, of which 62 were Catholics. By 1871 the population rose to 127 and then fell back to 110 (1890). By 1910, the population rose again to 124. In 1925, Brehmen had 165 inhabitants, 82 of whom were Evangelical Lutheran and 81 were Catholics .

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 129 inhabitants for Brehmen in the 1880s; 127 of them were Sorbs (98%) and only two were Germans.
