The Breitenau is a locality of Guxhagen in Northern Hesse , approx. 15 km south of Kassel , it lies on the Fulda near the mouth of the Eder . Today the A 7 motorway (Kassel- Würzburg ) runs directly past the Breitenau.

The center of the Breitenau is the Breitenau monastery from the 12th century. The former convent of Benedictine , founded around 1113 by Count Werner IV. Maggots , now houses a psychiatric hospital and has a colorful history. From 1874 to 1949 there was a correctional and rural poor institution, a workhouse. During the National Socialist era in 1933/34, this institution was an early concentration camp and from 1940 to 1945 a labor education camp ( Breitenau concentration camp ). In the post-war period there was a closed social welfare institution for girls on the site, which was closed in 1973.
