Breiteneich is a place and a cadastral municipality of the municipality of Horn in the Horn district in Lower Austria .

geography

The place is on the eastern edge of the Horner Basin . The altitude in the town center is 330 meters. The area of ​​the cadastral community covers 8.76 km². The population is 353 (as of 2001).

history

The area of ​​Breiteneich was already settled in the Neolithic , as various finds show. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1223 in the Middle Ages. Around 1400 a Jörg of Praytenaycher can be traced and in 1429 there are first indications of a castle, which is called Capella Castri Praittenaich in a spring . In 1541 Margarthe and Erasmus von Schneckenreith built Breiteneich Castle as one of the earliest Renaissance castles in Lower Austria.

On October 1, 1938, the local and cadastral community Breiteneich was incorporated into Horn and became independent again on October 10, 1945. Since January 1st 1970 the place belongs again to the municipality Horn.

Breiteneich is located on the municipal road from Horn to Rodingersdorf and on the Kamptalbahn . The ÖBB operate the request stop Breiteneich b. Horn . The PostBus bus company travels to the Breiteneich-Ortsmitte stop on lines 1251 ( Retz - Jetzelsdorf ), 1253 and 1255 (Horn-Retz), 1302 (Horn- Eggenburg ), 1315 (Horn- Weitersfeld ) and 9156 (Schweinburg-Horn).

Old castle in Breiteneich
  • Breiteneich Castle : The old castle was built in 1541, came into the possession of the Hoyos family in 1766and is now privately owned after several changes of ownership. The New Palace next to it was built in 1670.
  • Prussian cemetery : Outside the village is the Prussian cemetery. A memorial commemorates the events of 1866soldiers of the Prussian army buriedafter a cholera epidemic during the Austro-Prussian War .
  • On the right side of the road to Horn is the former castle tavern , the construction of which is similar to the old castle. It is a two-story building with a beautifully decorated arched portal. The six windows on the upper floor are adorned with rampant sgraffito strips. Two saddled horses dominate the facade; they give the impression that they have just thrown their riders off. The year 1583 appears twice.
