life and work

Inspired by the cultural heritage of Viennese Art Nouveau as well as Cubism and Expressionism , she began to express her world in oil pastels at a young age. In 1962 she received the first prize in a drawing competition at the academy on Schillerplatz in Vienna , awarded by the art teacher Gerda Matejka-Felden . The still life in oil pastel was then exhibited in the Vienna Secession .

For the next 30 years she devoted herself primarily to her family. In 1996 she turned back to the fine arts and was accompanied by her mentors Colnago , Schnetzinger and Hübler and dealt with oil painting. The early 2000s marked a turning point in Merk's career.

At the age of 65, she began studying art history , which she graduated from the University of Vienna with a Master of Arts degree in 2014 . Thonhauser-Merk has four children, lives and works in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna .

Her oeuvre of around 2,000 works includes paintings, drawings, graphics , collages and sculptures that have been shown in 120 exhibitions on four continents .

One of Merk's better-known works is the painting Gelbes Bouquet (2016), which won the Global Art Award in the “Illustration” category in Dubai in 2017 . Current works are shown in galleries in Paris , Vienna and New York .

She describes her artistic style, which combines figurative painting with abstract elements and strong colors, as “subrealism” and can be described as a figurative theme world with abstract dissonance and strong coloring.
