Geographically, Boaddus is located in the southern part of San Augustine County , largely taken by the Angelina National Forest . Apart from the district capital San Augustine, which is located in the northern part, Broaddus is the only other designated town in the county. The center of the settlement is not far from the banks of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir - a large dam that dams the lower reaches of the Angelina River . Also not far from the center is the estuary of the Attoyac Bayou - a stagnant body of water , the course of which forms the border between the counties of San Augustine and Nacogdoches and which flows west of the village into a branch of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Due to the intersecting road connections here, Broaddus plays the role of a local transport hub . In addition to State Highway 147 , which runs through the county in a north-south direction , these are the two farm-to-market roads 1277 and 83 . Localities in the wider area are the county capital San Augustine and the communities Brookeland ( Sabine County ), Zavalla (Angelina County), Etoile and Chireno (both Nacogdoches County).

Historically, Broaddus was founded around a train station . In 1904 a station of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway was built on the site of the present-day town . The settlement flourished with the timber transport ; from 1914 the place had a post office and several shops . In 1925 the population was estimated at around 400. In the 1930s the railroad service for Broaddus was stopped. The population decreased to 231 by 1960; in the following decades it leveled off at around 200.
