Bruce Normand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bruce George Alexander Normand (* 1966 in Nottingham ) is a British theoretical solid-state physicist and mountaineer .

Life

Normand studied from 1985 to 1988 at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in theoretical physics. He then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a doctoral student , where he did his doctorate in 1993 with Patrick A. Lee . His doctoral thesis dealt with the theory of high temperature superconductivity . He then worked in numerous scientific institutions as a post-doctoral student , research assistant and visiting scholar. Between 2009 and 2016 he was first visiting professor, and from 2011 finally Distinguished Professor at Renmin University of China . He is currently working at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen .

research

Bruce Normand works on the theory of quantum materials , such as the electron - phonon interaction in many-electron systems, as well as spin correlations in low-dimensional quantum magnets. In addition, he was often involved in the analysis and interpretation of experimental data on quantum materials.

Rockclimbing

Normand began mountaineering while studying physics at MIT. Since then he has climbed the K2 and numerous other peaks of the Himalayas over six and seven thousand meters above sea level. d. M. In addition, his expeditions took him to the highest mountains of the Andes and the Alps . In the course of time, Normand has made several first ascents of mountains, including Phola Kyung , Kyashar , Yanamax and Kangbulu , as well as numerous first ascents . Normand received the Piolet d'Or in 2010 for the first ascent of the 2650 meter high north face of the Xuelian Feng together with the US mountaineers Jed Brown and Kyle Dempster .

Among other things, Normand is a member of the Academic Alpine Club Zurich .

During an attempt to climb the Pakistani seven-thousander Ultar Sar in the summer of 2018 with the British Timothy Miller and the Austrian Christian Huber , there was an accident that attracted international attention. An avalanche struck their 5,900-meter-high tent, where they were waiting for better weather for the ascent, and buried them two meters deep. While Miller managed to free himself from the tent with his teeth and dig Normand free, Huber died under the blanket of snow. It was not until two days later that Miller and Normand were rescued by a military helicopter belonging to the Pakistani army.
