Piolet d'Or
The Piolet d'Or ( French for golden ice ax ) is probably the most important award for exceptional performance in extreme mountain sports . It has been awarded annually since 1991 by the French magazine Montagne Magazine in cooperation with the French extreme mountaineering association Groupe de Haute Montagne (GHM).
Since 2009 an honorary award for the life's work of outstanding alpinists has been given. This award bears since 2012 after the first prize winner Walter Bonatti , the term Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement, Walter Bonatti Award .
The jury is made up of prominent mountaineers and alpine journalists, alternating every year. Until 1998 , when the award was introduced, Jean-Claude Marmier , President of the GHM, was an integral part of every jury.
After criticism of the awarding mode and the basic idea of valuing alpine achievements with prizes had been raised during the award ceremony in 2007, the awarding of the award was suspended in 2008. There was criticism again in 2013 after the jury, consisting of Stephen Venables , Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner , Katsutaka Yokoyama and Silvo Karo, awarded all 17 nominated climbers who were in six successful rope teams in 2012.
