Brumadinho , officially Portuguese Município de Brumadinho , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the greater Southeast region . It is located southwest of the capital Belo Horizonte , around 40 km from the center of the metropolis, and belongs to the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte . As of July 1, 2019, the population was estimated to be 40,103. The inhabitants are called "Brumadinhenser" ( brumadinhenses ). They live on an area of around 639.4 km².

history

The first settlement took place by Bandeirantes , who founded the former settlement of Brumado Velho . "Bruma" refers to the fog or haze that occurs there. At the time of the province of Minas Gerais in the 19th century, the area formed the Distrito de Brumado e Paraopeba of the city of Bonfim . The district was renamed on September 18, 1914 in Distrito de Conceição do Itaguá and on September 7, 1923 again renamed in Distrito de Brumadinho .

By the state decree No. 148 of December 17, 1938, the place was raised to the independent Munizip Brumadinho. The date of the actual emancipation has not been communicated; the first president of the city council was not known by name until 1947.
