Bruno Benthien

Bruno Benthien (born April 12, 1930 in Schwerin ; † November 5, 2015 in Greifswald ) was a German geographer and Minister for Tourism of the GDR from 1989 to 1990 .

Life

After attending the Goethe High School in Schwerin and graduating from high school , Benthien studied geography , English and pedagogy at the University of Rostock from 1949 to 1952 and geography at the University of Greifswald in 1952/53 with a degree in geography . He then worked as an assistant (1953-1958), senior assistant (until 1959), lecturer (until 1962) and professor at the University of Greifswald and published on historical land forms, population and settlement geography. In 1955 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer nat. with the work “The Lewitz . Physical geography of a Mecklenburg individual landscape and in 1968 the habilitation with the thesis “ The historical corridors of south-western Mecklenburg. A study on the problem of village, field and economy, at the same time a contribution to the development history of the village settlements in the Schwerin district ”. From 1968 to 1983 Benthien headed the Geographical Institute at Greifswald University.

Benthien joined the FDJ in 1948 and became a member of the LDPD in 1962 . 1968–1971 he was deputy chairman and 1980–1984 chairman of the LDPD district association Greifswald. 1963-1976 he was a member of the Rostock district assembly, then until 1990 a member of the People's Chamber. In 1990 he joined the FDP .

From November 1989 to April 1990, Benthien was Minister of Tourism in the Modrow government , then Secretary of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism. Afterwards he taught again at the University of Greifswald.

Benthien was a member of the board of trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation from 1991 to 2008 .

Among other things, he was awarded the Labor Banner , the GDR Medal of Merit and the Pestalozzi Medal for loyal service .

Benthien died at the age of 85 and was buried in the New Cemetery in Greifswald .
