The Buchberg (summit actually Hörndl , 1154 m above sea level ) is an elevation near Bischofshofen in the province of Salzburg , Austria .
Location and landscape
The Buchberg is a foothill of the Hochgründeck , on the right in the Salzach Valley to the east via Bischofshofen. It is a wooded ridge that stretches from the Hochgründeck summit ( 1,827 m above sea level ) northwest, separated from the main massif by the Raidlgraben , a small tributary of the Fritzbach west of Pöham . On its flank, on the shoulder of the valley, lie the Bischofshofen villages of Buchberg , Kreuzberg and Winkl, as well as the old Buchberg church with a beautiful view; at Sankt Rupert it runs out over the Kreuzberg into the Sinnhubschlössl peninsula between Salzach and Fritzbach.
The spur elevation is actually called Hörndl , while Buchberg is officially the secondary summit 200 m to the west that can be seen from the valley ( 1124 m above sea level ⊙ ).
Mining Buchberg
The geological boundary between the Grauwackenzone and Werfener layers runs over the north-western flank of the Buchberg , from the valley between the town of Bischofshofen and Mitterberghütten via Stein, Reit, and Oberberg to Alpfahrt , passing below the Sporn summit. This forms the actual border between the Central Alps and the Limestone Alps . The zone is one of the richest in natural resources in the entire Alpine region. Copper mining is important here in this area .
Copper was mined on the Buchberg as early as prehistoric times, as studies on a row of pings south of the Hördlkapelle in the summit area have shown. This certainly includes the Sinnhubschlössl processing site at the foot of the mountain.
The Schurfbau fiefs above in a remnant of medieval mining. The farm name Arzberg ('Erzberg') south of Oberbichl also shows well-known sites.
Late 19th century was at Mitterberghütten (Mitterberger main course) the continuation of the Mühlbacher occurrence developed ( North and Südrevier ). In 1952, the continuation on the other side of the Salzach, on the Buchberg, was started (Buchberggang) . Here the ore vein has a thickness of about 20 cm. Were chipped in the room Laubichl the Upper (878 m) and the Lower Buchenberg tunnel (715 m), where a treatment plant was built, as well as 3 km further south in Naglgraben at Oberbichl the Schurfbau Arzbergstollen (868 m). Mining began on May 1, 1952. Here, 76–80 t of copper ore were extracted daily, up to the point of discontinuation a total of 175,000 t of stone (metal content around 1% Cu). Overall, however, the quality was unsatisfactory, on November 30, 1959, the Buchberg mine was shut down again. The workforce was then deployed in Mühlbach.
Mining should not have been easy, for the leather jump, the admission ceremony for young miners, the saying “Buchberg is purgatory, Mühlbach is hell” was said in Mühlbach.
Today the dumps are largely overgrown, the processing plant, which was closed down in 1960, has been completely renatured. Existing remains, such as the Schurfbau fiefs, the Maximiliansgrotte and the Stollen und Pingen Edt, are to be made tangible within the planned Ore of the Alps Geopark .
Hörndl Chapel
The Hörndlkapelle , also Hörndlfraukapelle , is a small mountain church on the summit of the Hörndl summit. She stands in the forest, hard on the eastern edge of the terrain. The mother of God , the farm maid Elisabeth Pilzegger, is said to have appeared here in 1851 . A votive chapel was then built.
The chapel is a simple wooden house in the style of forest and hunting lodges. The old chapel was recently demolished and replaced by a new building.
ways
The mountain can be reached easily from Winkl or Buchberg- Oberberg , the path over the summit connects the two localities and then continues as the normal route to Heinrich-Kiener-Haus with the St. Vinzenz Friedenskirche and the Hochgründeck. This path (in the variant via the Hofersattel, the Friedensweg ) also leads the St. Rupert pilgrim path into the valley to the Buchberg church and the St. Rupert mission house (route 3, stage 17)
