Bulacan ( Tagalog Bulakan ) is a municipality in the Filipino province of Bulacan .
The place is named, like the province, after the cotton that was once grown here in large quantities. In 1574 the place was founded by the Augustinians . Already in 1591 it had over 4800 inhabitants and thus became the capital of the province of the same name. It was not until shortly after the American occupation that Malolos City was named the capital. The most important educational institution is the Bulacan State University .
Bulacan is the birthplace of several well-known Filipino figures including:
- Marcelo H. del Pilar , nationalist and editor of the propaganda newspaper La Solidaridad .
- Gregorio del Pilar , nephew of Marcelo del Pilar and general during the Philippine-American War
- Deodato Arellano Filipino revolutionary and first president of the Katipunan
- Soc Rodrigo , former Filipino Senator
