history
The place Grillenberg was already mentioned in 880/890 in the Hersfeld tithe directory . At that time there will not have been a castle. This can only be assumed when a Tidericus de Grellenberch was mentioned in 1217 as a feudal man of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg ; possibly the castle was built around 1200. The lower wall parts of the castle ruins, which were created from large-format humpback blocks , can certainly still be assigned to the original Romanesque fortifications. In 1286, castle men from the Muser and von Morungen families are proven. A mention comes from 1311.
In 1347 the Margrave of Meißen , Friedrich the Serious , acquired the rule back from the Duke of Braunschweig , into whose hands it had come with the Margraviate of Landsberg . During the Halberstadt bishop's feud , which Bishop Albrecht II of Braunschweig (1325-1358) led against the rulers in the Harz region, mainly against the Counts of Regenstein , the castle was contested. It was conquered by the Counts of Mansfeld in 1362. It is possible that on this occasion a hill about 100 m east of the castle was built as a counter-fortification.
The second expansion stage, which is recognizable in the building fabric and characterized by brickwork, is classified in the literature in the 14th century.
In 1366 Duke Magnus von Braunschweig owned the castle. From here he exercised patronage rights over the Sittichenbach monastery . In 1485 the castle again belonged to the Elector of Saxony , Ernst von Sachsen . From there they came into the hands of the Counts of Mansfeld.
Since at least 1486 the lords of Morungen sat as feudal people at the castle. In 1547, with the death of Georg von Morungen, the rule fell to the Saxon office of Sangerhausen as a settled fief and the castle was destroyed. The timing of the final abandonment is unknown. It has been in ruins since the beginning of the 17th century.
