history

The castle was built in the 13th century by the bishops of Strasbourg and is said to have served as a base for Walter von Geroldseck's troops in 1261. The first secure documentary mention, however, dates back to 1334, when Bishop Berthold von Buchegg fled to the castle in the fight against King Ludwig IV .

During the Middle Ages , the complex had dimensions of 40 by 60 meters and had a rectangular residential tower with a floor plan measuring 7 by 11 meters. It was surrounded by a curtain wall and was protected by further towers and a moat . In 1350 a castle chapel was mentioned in a document.

Bishop Wilhelm II von Diest ceded Kochersberg Castle to the city of Strasbourg in 1422 . In the course of the next 100 years or so , it was occupied by foreign troops twice: in 1444 during the Hundred Years War by the Armagnacs and in 1525 during the German Peasants' War .

In the dispute over the legality of the Strasbourg cathedral chapter , the Protestant bishop Johann Georg von Brandenburg had it captured in 1592, but in June of the same year it was recaptured and burned down by the troops of his Catholic adversary and later successor Karl of Lorraine .

During the Dutch War , the castle ruins were once again the scene of historical events. In the Battle of Kochersberg on October 7, 1677, the future French Marshal François de Créquy defeated the troops of Emperor Leopold I there.

description

The castle area has the dimensions of about 206 by 215 meters. A geophysical survey carried out by the University of Strasbourg made it possible to localize the individual structures of the facility. Above ground, only a few remains of the former residential tower are preserved today.
