Burghard Schlicht (born July 24, 1946 in Detmold ) is a German filmmaker , journalist and author .

Origin and education

Burghard Schlicht's parents were the economist Herbert Schlicht and the economist Trude Schlicht, nee. Nebelsiek. At times he grew up in Detmold with his grandparents, the archaeologist Leo Nebelsiek and his wife Martha. He attended elementary school in Detmold and Frankfurt . There he also attended the old-language Lessing grammar school , where the later writer Jörg Fauser was his classmate. It was also Fauser who brought Schlicht to journalism in 1978 and later worked with him on the editorial board of the magazine TransAtlantik . After years of apprenticeship and traveling as a gardener, newspaper seller and TV producer , Schlicht began studying sociology in Frankfurt in 1971, which he completed in 1976 with a thesis on the figure of the "loser" in independent American cinema.

Film work

In 1970 Schlicht was "discovered" for the film and played a leading role in Michael Fengler's film Weg vom Fenster . Fengler, who worked with Rainer Werner Fassbinder , brought Schlicht to the antiteater , where he lived for a few months and worked on film productions, including the warning of a holy hooker and pioneer in Ingolstadt . Schlicht left the antiteater in November 1970, lived in Marrakech for half a year , and from the autumn of 1971 worked again increasingly in film productions, including Wim Wenders ' Die Angst des Tormanns bei penalty based on the novel by Peter Handke . In 1973/74 Schlicht wrote the screenplay for Eierdiebe , which Michael Fengler filmed with Marquard Bohm and Charly Wierczejewski in the leading roles. Further collaboration in films by Hark Bohm , Veith von Fürstenberg and Hans Noever . In 1989 Schlicht wrote the screenplay, produced, directed and played the leading role in the feature film Der Schönste ( ZDF ), a satirical comedy set in the Frankfurt Bahnhofsviertel (camera Jörg Jeshel , music Rio Reiser ).

Journalistic activity

From around 1980 Schlicht turned increasingly to journalistic activities - initially for print media (TransAtlantik, Der Spiegel , Stern , Pflasterstrand ), later for cultural reporting on television. Articles about the film in the Transatlantik magazine published by Hans Magnus Enzensberger , such as Poor German Film or Die Traumgroßhandel , which Schlicht wrote under the pseudonym Olga Grüber , caused a sensation. His film column Überflieger achieved some notoriety on the paved beach .

From 1986 Schlicht worked increasingly for cultural magazines on television, including books, books , a literary program initiated by Wilfried F. Schoeller , but also for programs such as Kulturzeit or ttttitel, thesen, temperamente .

Philosophy films and artist portraits

In the nineties, numerous films up to 50 minutes long were made for the Philosophy Today series by NDR and WDR about Jean Baudrillard ( On the Disappearance of Reality ), about metaphysics ( A journey to the things behind things ), about Michel de Montaigne , the Inventor of the essay, ( A journey between times ) or the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg ( Between Heaven and Cave ) and others. Some of the co-authors were the philosopher Franz Josef Wetz and the journalist Mathias Greffrath . This was followed by portraits of artists, for example about the film director Margarethe von Trotta , the photographer Barbara Klemm and the writers Wilhelm Genazino and Ingo Schulze .

novel

From 2012, Schlicht worked on the novel At the Moment of Freedom , which was published in July 2020. It tells the story of a young American woman who comes to Germany in 2001 and tries to track down her mother, who had lived on the film scene thirty years earlier, and all the greats of the film world at the time, such as the "Großer Kantlehner" or the singer Anna Lund knew. The young woman gets caught in a whirlwind of crazy scenes and encounters adventurous characters: The panorama of an era unfolds - spanning times and continents.
