Friedburg castle ruins

The Friedburg castle ruins , also known as Veste Sulzau , are the ruins of a hillside castle in the Sulzau district of Neukirchen am Großvenediger in the province of Salzburg .

history

The fortress Sulzowe with tower and defensive wall was probably built around the year 1000. A Heinrich Graf von Solzowe , whose name gives an indication of the castle, was mentioned as early as 1050. Before 1183 passes Graf Konrad of Sulzouwe hearing and goods in Uttendorf to the pin Berchtesgaden ; actually this was a Count von Frontenhausen, who called himself von Sulzau for this legal transaction. 1190 Herbord and Walter de Sulzowa are mentioned in a document ; but these were probably only the castle bailiffs of Sulzau. After the Frontenhausen family died out, the castle came to the V (F) elber in 1228. In 1292 Friedrich von Velben concluded a settlement with Archbishop Konrad IV after violent disputes . Through this, Kaprun Castle and the Hieburg came to the Velber, while the Archbishop received Sultzowe deu Purch . From 1297 on Sulzau was administered by archbishop castle keepers. The castle is said to have burned down in 1551 and was not rebuilt after that.

Friedburg castle ruins today

The ruin is located on an isolated cliff opposite the Hieburg castle ruins above the entrance to the Obersulzbachtal . The rock falls not only vertically to the north, but even overhanging about 60 meters deep. The ruin is connected to the Rabenkopf in the west via a path.

The castle ruin itself lies on a rocky ridge that drops steeply on three sides; on the slope side it is separated by a ditch . Apparently only the eastern half of the rock was built on, the western half, which was about 10 meters higher, probably served as a kind of natural shield wall . The Burgplatz is approx. 10 m wide and 60 m long and rises from east to west. The upright north wall is 5 m high and 18 m long and has a round arched gate. The east wall is 3 m high and 6 m long. Beam holes for a false ceiling have been preserved. The masonry consists of rubble stones of various sizes. Carefully hewn granite blocks appear in the area of the strongly rounded corner. Such corner cuboids are also present towards the west. The main building of the castle was about 9 × 6 meters; from this some foundation stones are still preserved.

Map with the Obersulzbachtal

The ruin can be reached when coming from Neukirchen, at Rosental, turns left into Obersulzbachtal. The road leads to Gasthof Friedburg, from there it takes about 30 minutes on a marked path that leads in very steep terrain to the castle ruins.
