Byron Stingily

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Byron Stingily (* in Chicago ) is an American singer and songwriter active in the fields of house music and R&B and known for his clear, high- pitched falsetto voice , which compares him to Smokey Robinson and Sylvester . He achieved first success in the late 1980s as the lead singer of the house trio Ten City . His biggest solo hits are Get Up (Everybody) (1996), You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (1998) and That's the Way Love Is (1999).

biography

Since he was five, Stingily grew up on Chicago's west side. Although he attended Blackburn College in rural Illinois in the early 1980s , he became part of the house scene in his hometown, also known as Windy City, by the middle of the decade. Stingily's first single was called Funny Love and was released in 1985 on Trax Records. After meeting house producer Marshall Jefferson , he recorded the Chicago classics Can Not Stay Away and Just a Little Bit in 1987 and founded the house trio Ragtyme with keyboardist Byron Burke and guitarist Herb Lawson.

When Stingily accompanied Jefferson to New York and made a big impression there, Atlantic Records offered him a solo contract . However, since he did not want to perform alone, he brought in his Ragtyme colleagues. The trio has been called Ten City since then and had ten hits on the Billboard Dance Charts from 1987 to 1994. Then the formation split up and Stingily began his solo career.

Although he was offered a solo contract by Columbia Records , Stingily decided to work for independent labels and began his career as a songwriter and producer . He co-wrote the songs Nitelife and Time for Love by Kim English and What About Our Love? by Incognito singer Maysa Leak . He made his first solo recordings as a singer, Don't Fall in Love and Right Back to You , in 1996 for Nervous Records. At the end of the year, Get Up (Everybody) , a cover version of Sylvester's 1978 hit Dance (Disco Heat) , was released and rose to number 1 on the Billboard dance charts and number 14 on the UK charts . In 1997, Sing a Song, produced by Mousse T. , climbed to number 19 on the dance hit parade and number 38 in Great Britain.

In 1998 the album The Purist was released with the previous hits. Also included on it are You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) , a cover version of the New Year's Eve hit from 1978, which reached number 1 on the dance and number 13 of the UK charts in 1998, as well as Testify , which was number 20 on the dance charts and numbered 48 in the UK. Stingily had a third number one hit in the dance charts in 1999 with That's the Way Love Is , in Great Britain the track reached number 32. Another three top 10 dance hits followed in 2000 with Why Can't You Be Real? , Stand Right Up and U Turn Me . The accompanying album Club Stories was released in 2001, but did not make it into the charts. Since then, solo singles and features with other artists have appeared again and again, but chart successes have not been achieved.

Stingily is now the headmaster in Chicago, but also active as a musician.
