Cabaret Maxime is an American - Portuguese fictional film from 2018 by the Portuguese director Bruno de Almeida . It opened in Portuguese cinemas on May 31, 2018 .

Benni Gazza runs a nightclub, Cabaret Maxime . As interest in the property increases, so does the pressure from various actors from the underworld and other business people. However, Gazza is resisting attempts to make quick money with prostitution or real estate deals. Instead of the easy profit, he would rather continue his beloved nightclub operations in the usual way. In this conflict he faces dangerous characters, but also friends, especially his companion, the hard-drinking dancer Stella.

Reception and production

The title of the atmospheric independent film alludes to the traditional Lisbon nightclub Cabaret Maxime . The plot is based on classic gangster films, but essentially deals with the progressive gentrification in Lisbon .

The film was shot in the nightlife district on Cais do Sodré , where the fictional nightclub functions among other bars and clubs (the original nightclub Cabaret Maxime was on Praça da Alegria , not far from Avenida da Liberdade ).

As in The Lovebirds , Michael Imperioli and Ana Padrão play the central couple.

The critics emphasized the successful acting and the melancholic, nostalgic mood of the film, especially its story of urban nightlife, influenced by Lopes , Cassavetes and Scorsese , which is sometimes described as too nostalgic.
