The district of Caja is located in the province of Acobamba in the Huancavelica region in southwest central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​86.9 km². In the 2017 census, 1942 inhabitants were counted. In 1993 the population was 2973, in 2007 2968. The district administration is located in the 3668  m high village of Caja Espíritu (also Caja or Caja Espíritu Santo) with 502 inhabitants (as of 2017). Caja Espíritu is 14 km southeast of the provincial capital Acobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Caja is located in the central east of the province of Acobamba. The lengthwise extension in north-south direction is about 18 km, the maximum width is almost 5 km. The district is located in the arid Andean highlands . In the north the area is bounded by the Río Mantaro , in the south by the Río Urubamba .
