The Calmus Ensemble Leipzig is Leipzig vocal quintet, in 1999 by five former Thomas Choir was founded. His first album was released in 2001.
history
Sebastian Krause, Markus Arnold, Ludwig Böhme and Ulrich Barthel performed together with “A friend, a good friend” for the first time in October 1996 at an internal event of the Leipzig Thomanerchor. Due to the positive response, they decided to continue singing together, at that time mainly songs by the Comedian Harmonists and classical male choirs.
After all four singers left the St. Thomas Choir in 1998, they founded an ensemble. Its first concert took place in early 1999 in a church near Leipzig. After tenor Martin Lattke joined the ensemble, they called themselves Calmus in mid-1999 , a combination of the initials from Arnold, Ludwig, Martin, Ulrich, Sebastian, supplemented by a C at the beginning.
The cast now consists of 4 male and 1 female voices. Concert tours have taken the group to numerous countries in Europe, North and South America and Asia. In addition to the concert activity, a sheet music edition is also published, which includes, among other things, arrangements that were specially written for Calmus. The arrangers include Philip Lawson (former baritone of the King's Singers ), Fredo Jung , Hannu Lepola (tenor of the Rajaton group ) and members of the ensemble. In addition, composition commissions are regularly awarded. In the course of its existence the quintet has received numerous prizes and awards.
