Luis Camnitzer

Luis Camnitzer (born November 6, 1937 in Lübeck ) is a Uruguayan contemporary artist, art theorist , university professor and curator who lives in the USA . The conceptual artist uses art forms such as installation , drawing , printmaking and photography as artistic means. He was a participant in the documenta .

Life

In 1939 the family emigrated from Lübeck to Montevideo , Uruguay with the two-year-old Luis Camnitzer . Camnitzer studied sculpture , architecture and printmaking there from 1953 to 1962 at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes of the Universidad de la República . In 1957 he received a scholarship from the German federal government, which enabled him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . There he studied with Heinrich Kirchner and received an academy award the following year. In 1961 he received a Guggenheim scholarship , on the basis of which he deepened his studies at the New York Pratt Institute . In 1964 he moved to the USA . There he received a further scholarship from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture from 1965 to 1966. In the following years he also taught art at the State University of New York / College at Old Westbury from 1969 . Today he lives in New York State .

After training as a graphic designer , Camnitzer developed an autonomous oeuvre as a conceptual artist, with which he was invited to participate in exhibitions at the Tate Modern Gallery London and the Museum of Modern Art New York. Among his most famous works include the Leftovers from the year 1970 , as well as from the years 1983 / 84 , the photo series From the Uruguayan Torture Series , the Enwezor in 2002 for the Documenta 11 chose.

The written word is one of Camnitzer's preferred tools in the visual arts . A cycle of works “Last Words” (2008) consists of a continuous text on six poster-sized prints from the last words of death row inmates .

Camnitzer invites visitors to participate in some exhibitions. His project “The Last Book”, sponsored by the Spanish National Library , is designed as a collection of written and visual explanations for future generations . Out of concern for the future of the written word and the book, Camnitzer called on artists worldwide from 2007 to contribute a book page as a written and visual testimony to book culture. In 2010 The Last Book consisted of more than 680 artistic discussions of different language, orientation and quality. It is mainly exhibited in important places of book culture.

Camnitzer is the author of art-theoretical and art-historical writings (cf.) and Professor Emeritus of the State University of New York Department of Visual Arts .
