Since April 4, 2004, the former independent parishes of Casima with the church of San Carlo from the 18th century, district of Monte and at the same time Campora, formerly part of the municipality of Caneggio , are included in the municipality of Castel San Pietro. Castel San Pietro extends over the entire western side of the Muggiotal ( Italian: Valle di Muggio) to Monte Generoso . The municipality includes the fraction of Corteglia .

Neighboring municipalities are Mendrisio , Breggia , Coldrerio , Balerna , Morbio Inferiore , Melano and Rovio .

history

The village was first mentioned in 865 when the imperial follower Sigeradus donated the place to the monastery of Sant'Ambrogio (Milan) . From the middle of the 13th century, the village was owned by the Bishop of Como and the Rusconi family. In 1171 the village was called Castellum Sancti Petri . The Bishop of Como, Bonifatius Quadri from Modena , built a church in the castle (1343), which was later called the red church in memory of the bloody quarrel between the Bosia and Rusconi in 1390 .
