Câmpulung ([ kɨmpuˈluŋɡ ], pronunciation ? / I , German Langenau ) is a city in Romania , which is located in the Argeș district (in northern Wallachia ) and in 2011 had about 31,800 inhabitants. Geographical location

The city is located along a remote range of hills south of the Carpathian peaks , at the beginning of a long and wooded valley aisle of the Târgului River , a tributary of the Argeș , at an altitude of about 600  m . The pure air and the shape of the landscape make Câmpulung a popular summer excursion destination.

The Drum național 73 runs through Câmpulung , a traffic connection in the Törzburg Pass, 36 kilometers to the north, to Transylvania . From the city the national road DN73 leads south to Piteşti and further north the Drum național 72A leads to Târgovişte .

history

Transylvanian-Saxon settlers played a crucial role in founding the city . They called the city Langenau (lat. Campus Longus ). The Transylvanian-Saxon community was able to hold its own until the end of the 17th century. The Catholic Church ( Bărăția ) from the 13th century was built by them. Câmpulung was the first capital of the medieval principality of Wallachia in the 13th century, followed by Curtea de Argeș in the 14th century. There are more than 20 churches in the city. There is also a monastery and cathedral, both founded in the 13th century by Radu I , the first prince of Wallachia .
